CHURCH HISTORY

The Second Baptist Church is located at 605 South 34th Street, Mt. Vernon, Illinois.

The year is 1991 and Brother Jim Duncan is the Pastor.

On November 18th, 1904, at 2 p.m., a group of Baptists met in a tent on the corner of Welkins Street and Conger Avenue to organize a Baptist Church.

Reverend B.F. Rodman, District Missionary, was chosen as moderator. Reverend A.A.

Todd, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, was chosen as clerk.

Seventy-three members of the First Baptist Church were, at their own request, granted letters of dismissal for the purpose of organizing into the Second Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon, Illinois.

The building site on Conger Avenue near 11th Street was chosen December 29th, 1904, and Reverend J.W. Allen was called as the first Pastor.

The church building was dedicated the fourth Sunday in July, 1905. This structure was destroyed by fire in 1940, along with many of the church records.

Within a year, under the leadership of their Pastor, Reverend Sam McCoy, the congregation had built a brick and stone structure which now stands on the original location at 11th and Conger.

On September 19, 1956, the church decided to move to a new location. On October 17,1956, the church purchased the present site consisting of 10 l/2 acres of ground at 605 South 34th Street. The cost of the ground was $16,500.00.

On December 2, 1958, Reverend W. Carl Whittington returned to begin a third term as Pastor.

The ground was paid for and the Deed recorded during the Spring of 1960.

The Auditorium and North unit of the educational building were dedicated July 30, 1961.

The South unit was dedicated July 29, 1962.

The Sanctuary Extension was dedicated November 24, 1974.

The Fellowship Hall and adjoining classrooms were dedicated September 19, 1976. Note burning ceremonies were held September 23, 1984.

Second Baptist Church is affiliated with the Salem South Baptist Association, Illinois Baptist State Association, and The Southern Baptist Convention.
