CHURCH HISTORY
The Second Baptist Church is located at 605
South 34th Street ,
Mt.
Vernon, Illinois.
The year is 1991 and Brother Jim Duncan is
the Pastor .
On November 18th, 1904, at 2 p.m. ,
a group of Baptists met in a
tent on the corner of Welkins Street and Conger Avenue to organize a
Baptist Church.
Reverend B .F.
Rodman,
District Missionary,
was chosen as moderator.
Reverend A.A.
Todd ,
Pastor of First Baptist Church
of Mt.
Vernon,
Illinois,
was chosen as clerk.
Seventy-three members of the First Baptist
Church were, at their own request ,
granted letters of dismissal
for the purpose of organizing into the Second Baptist Church of Mt.
Vernon,
Illinois.
The bui lding
site on Conger Avenue near 11th Street was chosen December 29th,
1904,
and Reverend J.W.
Allen was called as the first
Pastor.
The church building was dedicated the fourth
Sunday in July ,
1905. This structure was
destroyed by fire in 1940,
along with many of the church records.
Within a year ,
under the leadership of their
Pastor,
Reverend Sam McCoy, the congregation
had built a brick and stone structure which
now stands on the original location at 11th and Conger.
On September 19 ,
1956,
the church decided to move to
a new location.
On October 17,1956,
the church purchased the
present site consisting of 10 l/2
acres of ground at 605 South 34th Street.
The cost of the ground was $16,500.00.
On December 2 ,
1958,
Reverend W.
Carl Whittington returned to
begin a third term as Pastor.
The ground was paid for and the Deed
recorded during the Spring of 1960 .
The Auditorium and North unit of the
educationa l
building were dedicated July 30,
1961.
The South unit was dedicated July 29 ,
1962.
The Sanctuary Extension was dedicated
November 24 ,
1974.
The Fellowship Hall and adjoining classrooms
were dedicated September 19 ,
1976.
Note burning ceremonies were
held September 23,
1984.
Second Baptist Church is affiliated with the
Salem South Baptist Association ,
Illinois Baptist State
Association,
and The Southern Baptist Convention.
